SUMMARY:

Responsible for the support of the engineering team in the electrical design of embedded microprocessor-based controls for HVAC and water heating products. Typical duties will include controls algorithm development, proof-of-concept documentation, proof-of-concept development, building test fixtures, proof-of-concept verification and controls failure analysis. This is an important position on the electronic controls for a team that produces residential and commercial water heaters, boilers and HVAC equipment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
(To perform within this position successfully, the incumbent must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned)

  • Assist systems engineers in algorithm development, systems documentation, designing and building proof-of-concept controls, validating proof-of-concept controls, and performing failure analysis.
  • Assist in the assembly of electronic components, including soldering, wiring, and mounting on printed circuit boards (PCBs).
  • Follow detailed assembly instructions, processes, procedures, and standards to ensure the accurate assembly of products.
  • Support the testing and troubleshooting of electronic assemblies to identify and resolve defects or issues.
  • Assist in developing controls design system specifications with an understanding of possible associated circuits, associated sensors, associated output devices to formalize requirements that can be reviewed and approved by key engineers and product managers.
  • Work with cross-functional teams through direct interactions and team meetings in developing and translating new concepts into requirements.
  • Assist in developing design concepts or models, oversee prototype construction, and conduct performance testing to determine practical feasibility of concepts.
  • Participate in formal design reviews of controls product/business requirements, controls system requirements, hardware/software controls requirements, schematics, as well as FMEA, DFM, DFT, and other related analyses.
  • Prepare and support the release of engineering requirements, design, and qualification documentation.
  • Continue to develop professionally in both formal training/coursework and self-study.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

     Required Education & Experience:

  • Enrolled in a course of study toward a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or related field.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • Minimum 0-2 years of related experience.
  • Able to work successfully with multiple departments such as R&D, marketing, manufacturing, sales, and suppliers.
  • 3 to 5 term Co-Op.

     Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Familiarity with multiple communications media and protocol such as wired, wireless, optic, CAN, BACnet, Modbus, TCP/IP a plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications – Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams.

     Preferred Education & Experience:

  • Experience with electronic controls including analog and digital circuit design, prototyping, and testing.
  • Experience with electronic analysis methodologies and associated instrumentation.
  • Experience with controls designs utilizing Renesas RX, or RA, or related microprocessors, LCDs, RS-485 communications, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and/or cellular communications, low power, and analog circuitry.
  • Experience utilizing a formal Product Development Process.
  • Software architecture and programming for embedded microprocessor based electronic controls.
